Best Time to Visit Australia: When Should You Go?

One of the biggest mistakes travellers make when planning a trip to Australia is not considering the weather during the time of year they’re visiting.

I made the same mistake my first visit and it cost me a new wardrobe.
Seriously.

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, which means the seasons are completely reversed. While Canadians & Brits are scraping ice off their windshields in January, Aussies are heading to the beach.

And because Australia is so large, the best time to visit depends entirely on where you’re going.

Is There Really a “Best” Time to Visit Australia?

The short answer?
Yes…and no

Australia is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends entirely on:

  • where you are going
  • what you plan to do
  • how long you’re travelling
  • your tolerance for heat

A recent conversation with a client is the perfect example.

She told me that when she finally made it to Australia, one place she absolutely had to visit was Coober Pedy — Australia’s famous opal mining town and self-proclaimed Opal Capital of the World.

It had been on her bucket list for years.

There was just this one problem…she was planning to visit in January.

When I asked if she was comfortable spending her days in temperatures pushing 37°C (99°F) she went silent.

Like many first-time visitors, she had no idea.

Coober Pedy is located in the Australian Outback and is famous for its extreme heat. In fact, many locals live in underground homes to escape the scorching summer temps.

That conversation became the perfect reminder of why timing matters so much when planning an Australia trip.

The “best” time to visit Australia isn’t the same for everyone.

What’s perfect for a Sydney Harbour walk in October may not be ideal for exploring the Outback in January or snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef in February.

My Personal Favourite Time to Visit Australia

If I could only recommend one time of year to visit Australia (for Canadians & Brit’s) I’d choose either September–November (Spring) or April–May (Autumn).

The weather is beautiful, no humidity and you can travel north to south without experiencing extreme weather fluctuations.

Plus, if you’re planning to ‘see it all’ – including Uluru, this is generally a more tolerable time of year to do so.

My first trip to Australia was April 2016 when I landed in Perth

Knowing nothing about Aussie seasons, it felt like summer to my Canadian blood with daytime temps 25-27°C.

At the time, I had every intention of returning home after my trip.

Well…that didn’t exactly happen.

After forfeiting my flight home, May and June rolled around and well…Australia winter got chilly.

Now, it’s not a ‘winter’ like Canada, but it’s brisk mornings had me needing to shop for hoodies and sweaters because I’d only packed for hot weather.

At the time, all I knew about Australia was this:

Australia = hot.

Not quite.

I learned pretty quickly that parts of Australia are warm year-round (think Cairns, Darwin), others get snow like Victoria and Tasmania. It literally catches many first-time visitors completely off guard….It did for me!

And that’s exactly why understanding Australia’s seasons can make such a big difference when planning your trip.

Best Time to Visit Sydney (NSW)

Spring (Sept-Nov)

  • mild temperatures no humidity
  • jacaranda trees blooming
  • Whale migration season (Nov)

Autumn (Mar-May)

  • fewer crowds
  • pleasant weather

Best Time to Visit the Great Barrier Reef

  • June to October
  • best whale migration season
  • lower humidity
  • best underwater visibility

Best Time to Visit Uluru & The Red Centre

  • May to September

Avoid:

  • December to February (sizzling heat)
